  • Why it's important to check for that hidden vehicle history

If buying a used vehicle always check the car's history

You’ve probably seen the horror stories on those “Here comes the bailiff” TV programmes. An innocent buyer sees a car they like the look of, and the price is just too good to be true. There’s a reason for the quick sale – the seller is going away, needs the cash, or has just seen something they like better, so they’re willing it sell it to you for an unbelievable price. You view the car, hand over your cash, and drive away in your new car, patting yourself on the back for grabbing such a bargain.

You show your friends and family your amazing new car. You buy all the accessories you want for it, insure it and look after it. After a house, a car is one of the most expensive things you can buy, and you want to make the most of your new asset.

Then, early one morning – maybe a week, or maybe a month or two after you handed over your hard earned money - the bailiffs turn up and take your car away. There’s not a thing you can do about it either – they’ve got all the legal paperwork to seize your vehicle. You end up with a bundle of paperwork, no car, and seriously out of pocket. There’s no way to get your money back.

So how does this happen? It’s usually because the seller had “bought” their car from a dealer on hire purchase, which is a bit like a loan. They’ll have made a couple of payments, then stopped paying, so the dealership will quite rightly want to get their car back.

With the car and keys in the sneaky seller’s possession, there’s nothing stopping them selling the car on to you before the car has to be handed back to the dealer. They pocket your cash, but you can bet they won’t use it to pay off their HP. Some even go a step further and report the car to the police as stolen.

If you want to avoid this happening to you, you can pay for a report called a HPI Check on your car before you purchase it. These come with varying amounts of research on your new car. LG Car Sales carry out a full and complete HPI Check on every single car on our forecourt. Our HPI Checks make sure that the car is not reported as stolen, is clear of any sort of finance arrangement with a dealer, and has never been written off.
