Which Car Should I Buy? Ford Focus vs VW Golf
There’s no denying that the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf make great choices if you’re looking for your next hatchback. So how do you choose the car that’s best suited to you? This guide will compare these two iconic cars to highlight their strengths and weaknesses.
The Ford Focus was always intended to be a family car since it was introduced in 1998 to replace the Escort. It was popular from the off due to its spaciousness and easy dashboard use. Compared to the first Golf introduced in 1974, you can’t compare the design as it came out 24 years prior. However, it was still an innovative vehicle and was labelled as the successor to Volkswagen’s popular Beetle by keeping it a compact car.
What trims are available?
The biggest difference is the type of trims available for each car. With the Golf, 7 of the 9 trims are performance-focused:
R-Line
GTE
GTI
GTD
R
R 20 Years (Special Edition 20th Anniversary)
GTI Clubsport
There’s no denying that Volkswagen can provide an excellent hot hatch with the Golf, with trims that suit drivers who are after a vehicle that will make their journey more exciting.
With the GT trims, you’ll be able to select your driver profile to ensure that the car drives the way you like it. There are also several driver-assist options, such as Lane Assist, Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist.
The R trims are inspired by the racetrack with features like sports seats and 4Motion, all-wheel drive.
In comparison, the Ford Focus has 3 performance-focused trims out of the 7 available:
ST-Line
ST-Line X
ST
It’s a car that’s more an all-rounder as it also has trims that would appeal to drivers who favour SUVs and crossover vehicles:
Active
Active X
At its core, the Ford Focus prioritises affordability and keeping running costs low. They have used the EcoBoost engine to ensure that fuel is used as efficiently as possible and are now included with their range of hybrid engines.
What about the interiors?
The Golf’s interior is more minimalist in its approach. There are few buttons, as most features can be controlled using the large touchscreen display. If you’re not used to predominantly using a touchscreen, it may take a little time to get used to.
On the other hand, the Focus has buttons and dials for the air con and stereo and a touchscreen display for the infotainment system. Both cars have Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto connectivity, sat nav, air-con and cruise control. So it really comes down to which layout you’d prefer to use.
